What should you know about pale skin and lips?

Short answer
Pale skin and lips can occur with cold or circulation changes, but a persistent or sudden change should be judged alongside breathing, energy, and other symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why lips are useful to observe
Lips may look pale when blood flow changes or when the surrounding skin is naturally light. Anaemia can present with pallor, and iron deficiency anaemia, vitamin B12 deficiency, thalassaemia, and sickle cell disease may present with pale skin among other features. These conditions cannot be confirmed by looking at the lips. Blue, grey, or dusky lips are a different and more urgent colour change because they may reflect inadequate oxygen or circulation.
Check the colour in daylight and consider whether cold exposure, tight clothing, exertion, or a recent illness preceded it. Look for breathlessness, unusual tiredness, faintness, or chest discomfort.
Steps you can take
Warm up gradually if you have just been in a cold environment, then see whether the colour returns to its usual appearance. If pallor remains, note its onset and any changes in sleep, diet, bleeding, exercise tolerance, or medicines. Arrange a clinical review; an examination and blood tests may help identify the cause. Do not use iron supplements unless advised after considering your symptoms and test results.
Urgent signs involving the lips
Call for urgent help if lips become blue-grey or dusky, especially with severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, drowsiness, or collapse. Prompt assessment is also appropriate for sudden paleness with heavy bleeding, fainting, or marked weakness. Make a routine appointment when pale lips and skin persist or recur without an obvious trigger.
What to ask
Does the colour change look like pallor, cyanosis, or something else? Could anaemia explain my fatigue or breathlessness? Do I need blood tests or an assessment of circulation? Which lip or breathing changes should prompt emergency help?
