Painful Itchy Bumps on the Scalp: What You Should Know

Small bumps around hairs may occur with Folliculitis, especially after sweating, friction or close clipping. Flaking and itch can accompany Dandruff or Seborrheic Dermatitis; thicker, sharply defined scale may occur with Scalp Psoriasis. Head Lice can cause intense itching and scratch marks, with eggs attached close to the hair shaft. A new product, dye or styling substance may irritate the scalp. These conditions can overlap, and appearance alone may not be enough to distinguish them.

Wash gently and avoid scratching, picking, tight headwear and fragranced products until the cause is clearer. Keep brushes, hats and pillowcases personal if Head Lice is possible, and do not share them.
