Painful callus on the foot: what to know

Short answer

A painful foot callus usually reflects repeated pressure or friction, so relieving the source matters as much as treating the thickened skin.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main mechanism
Repeated pressure or friction
First footwear change
Roomy shoes with toe space
Avoid
Cutting or chemically burning the skin

Why a callus can hurt

A callus is an area of thickened skin formed where the foot repeatedly bears pressure or rubs against footwear. Pain can arise when the thickened area is squeezed, cracked, or sits over a prominent joint. Bunions, Hammer Toe, Hallux Rigidus, or Flat Feet can change how weight moves through the foot and create a recurring pressure point. Plantar Fasciitis and Stress Fracture can also cause foot pain, but they are different problems and may not produce a callus.

Reduce pressure safely

Choose roomy shoes with a soft upper and enough space for the toes. Consider cushioned socks and avoid footwear that rubs the sore area. Do not cut, shave, or burn the callus yourself, and avoid medicated corn or callus products unless a clinician says they are suitable. A podiatry or orthopaedic assessment can check walking mechanics and whether Custom Orthotics could redistribute pressure.

When to arrange care

Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, drainage, an open crack, fever, or rapidly increasing pain. Arrange assessment if the area bleeds, keeps returning despite better footwear, or causes a change in walking. People with diabetes, reduced sensation, or circulation problems should have a foot lesion checked before attempting home treatment.

Questions to ask

Ask whether the thickened area is a callus, corn, wart, or another lesion, and what is creating the pressure. Discuss safe trimming, footwear changes, padding, and whether your toe or arch shape needs treatment. Mention numbness, skin breaks, diabetes, and how long the pain has been present.

Questions people ask

Can I remove a painful callus at home?

Do not cut it yourself; reducing pressure and having the area assessed is safer, particularly when sensation or circulation is reduced.

Why does my callus keep coming back?

The pressure source may still be present, such as tight footwear, a toe deformity, or altered foot mechanics, so treating the cause matters.
