Pain in right flank under ribs: what to know

The flank is the side between the lower ribs and the hip. Pain that changes with twisting, lifting, coughing, or pressing the area can come from muscles or the ribs. Deeper pain with nausea, blood in the urine, burning when passing urine, or waves of severe discomfort can occur with Kidney Stones. Fever, chills, feeling unwell, and urinary symptoms need assessment because Kidney Infection or Urinary Tract Infection can involve the side or back. Pain under the right ribs can also overlap with gallbladder or digestive problems, especially after meals.

Note when the pain began, whether it is constant or comes in waves, and whether movement, meals, urination, or breathing affects it. Rest from strenuous activity and use a comfortable position. Drink normally unless a clinician has told you to restrict fluids. A pharmacist can advise whether a suitable pain reliever fits your health history; avoid taking medicines that have caused problems for you before. Arrange a medical assessment if the pain persists, keeps returning, or is not settling.

Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening pain, fainting, confusion, repeated vomiting, a swollen or rigid abdomen, or inability to pass urine. Get prompt medical help for fever or chills with flank pain, visible blood in the urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or pain after a significant injury. Breathing difficulty or chest pressure also needs emergency assessment.
