Left chest pain when lifting an arm: what to know

Short answer
Left-sided chest pain when lifting an arm often involves muscles, ribs, or shoulder tissues, yet heart and lung causes must be considered when symptoms are new or severe.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What movement can tell you
Pain that starts after reaching, lifting, exercise, or an awkward position and changes when the arm, shoulder, or chest wall moves may reflect a muscle, tendon, rib, or joint problem. Tenderness when the area is pressed supports a chest-wall source but does not rule out other causes. Acid reflux, gastritis, and peptic ulcer can cause burning or upper abdominal discomfort. Angina may bring pressure with exertion, while pneumonia or pulmonary embolism can cause pain linked with breathing and may also cause breathlessness. Panic disorder and shingles are other possibilities in the right context.
Steps to take
Pause the activity and avoid heavy lifting until the cause is clearer. Keep the shoulder gently mobile if that does not worsen the pain, and record which movements trigger it. Do not use strenuous exercise as a test. Seek medical advice for persistent, repeated, or unexplained pain, especially if you have heart or lung risk factors. A clinician can assess the chest wall, shoulder, breathing, and circulation and decide whether further tests are needed.
When it is an emergency
Call emergency services for chest pressure, pain spreading to the arm or jaw, severe breathlessness, fainting, blue lips, cold sweating, sudden weakness, or coughing blood. Get urgent help if the pain is severe, follows a significant injury, or comes with a fast or irregular heartbeat. Movement-related pain is not a safe reason to delay care when these features are present.
Questions for an appointment
Ask: Does the examination suggest chest-wall or shoulder irritation? What features would suggest angina or a lung problem? Is an ECG or imaging appropriate? Which activities and pain medicines are safe while I recover?

Questions people ask
Does pain with arm movement rule out a heart problem?
No. It can suggest a chest-wall cause, but new chest pain with pressure, exertion, or warning symptoms still needs urgent assessment.
Can I keep exercising with this pain?
Stop strenuous activity until the cause is understood, particularly if the pain is new, worsening, or associated with breathing difficulty.
