Pain during sex on the right side: what it can mean

Pain at the entrance may involve dryness, skin inflammation, or pelvic-floor tightening. Deeper pain on the right can be felt when a position presses on the cervix or an ovary. Endometriosis can cause pain with deep penetration, while an ovarian endometrioma may produce one-sided pelvic discomfort. Pelvic inflammatory disease can cause deeper pain with unusual discharge, bleeding, or pelvic tenderness. A symptom does not identify its cause by itself.

Stop or change an activity that causes pain, and record whether it is superficial or deep, position-related, linked with your cycle, or followed by bleeding or discharge. A clinician may ask about pregnancy possibility, periods, urinary symptoms, bowel symptoms, contraception, and infection exposure. Examination and, when appropriate, testing or an ultrasound can separate surface irritation from a pelvic cause. Treatment depends on that finding; it may involve addressing dryness, infection, muscle tension, or a pelvic condition.

Arrange medical assessment if the pain keeps returning, interferes with intimacy, or comes with bleeding, discharge, burning urine, or fever. Seek urgent care for sudden severe one-sided pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, repeated vomiting, or heavy bleeding, especially if pregnancy is possible.

Could the pain be from the vaginal tissues, pelvic muscles, cervix, ovary, or an infection? What examination or tests fit my symptoms? Should I avoid penetration until the cause is clearer?
