P aeruginosa pneumonia

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a bacterium that can infect lung tissue, particularly in people with chronic lung disease, recent hospital care, weakened immunity, or exposure to healthcare equipment. A diagnosis is made from the full clinical picture, examination, imaging, and sometimes a sample of Coughing Up Phlegm. Symptoms can resemble Pneumonia caused by other organisms, Influenza, or COVID-19.

The infection can interfere with oxygen exchange and may become severe. A clinician may assess breathing rate, oxygen level, blood pressure, and mental alertness. The specific bacterium matters because some antibiotics do not work against it.

Take the prescribed antibiotic exactly as directed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes it. Rest, drink suitable fluids, and follow instructions about inhalers, oxygen, or hospital observation. Do not share antibiotics or use an old prescription. Keep a record of worsening Cough, new Fever, increasing phlegm, chest discomfort, or reduced ability to walk or speak comfortably.

Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, inability to stay awake, or rapidly worsening weakness. Prompt assessment is also needed when Fever or Chills persist with a worsening Cough, or when you cough up blood. A serious infection can progress to Sepsis, which requires immediate treatment.

Ask how the diagnosis was confirmed, which antibiotic targets the bacterium, how long treatment is expected to last, and when your breathing should be reviewed. Ask whether follow-up imaging or a specialist review is needed.
