What does ovulation pain feel like?

Mittelschmerz can be on the right or left side and may switch sides in different cycles. It can feel dull, pulling, cramp-like, or briefly sharper, and some people notice mild lower-back discomfort or light spotting. The timing and short course are useful clues, but sensations vary and pain is not a dependable way to diagnose ovulation. Endometriosis, ovarian cysts, infection, bowel problems, and urinary conditions can cause similar pelvic symptoms. A symptom diary can help show whether the discomfort follows a repeatable cycle pattern.

For mild discomfort, rest, gentle movement, or a warm pack may help. Write down the exact location, sensation, cycle day, duration, bleeding, bowel changes, urinary symptoms, and whether movement changes the pain. Follow medicine-label directions if using an over-the-counter pain reliever, and ask a pharmacist about safe choices if you are pregnant or have another health condition. Arrange a review if episodes are new, recurring, disruptive, or different from your usual experience.

Seek urgent care for sudden intense pelvic pain, fainting, fever, repeated vomiting, heavy vaginal bleeding, or pain with a possible pregnancy. Prompt assessment is also needed if the abdomen is very tender, pain steadily worsens, or you cannot carry out normal activities. These signs should not be attributed to ovulation without an examination.
