Ovulation pain after a trigger shot: what to know

A trigger shot is used in some fertility cycles to help time ovulation. As a follicle releases an egg, you may notice pressure, cramping, or a one-sided ache in the lower abdomen. Ovaries may also feel tender after stimulation, particularly when more than one follicle has developed.

Pain alone cannot confirm that ovulation has happened or show how many follicles responded. Endometriosis and ovarian cysts are other possible explanations for pelvic pain. Fertility medicines can rarely lead to excessive ovarian response, so symptoms such as increasing abdominal swelling, breathlessness, reduced urination, or persistent vomiting require medical advice without delay.

Follow the exact instructions from your fertility clinic about activity, intercourse, medication, and testing. Note the injection time, pain location, severity, bleeding, discharge, nausea, abdominal swelling, and urine output. Rest, gentle heat, and the pain relief approved by your clinic may ease mild symptoms.

Contact the treatment team if pain is more than mild, lasts beyond the expected window, or makes movement difficult. Do not add medicines or change the treatment plan without checking first, because some pain medicines may not fit your cycle instructions.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, trouble breathing, chest pain, repeated vomiting, rapidly increasing abdominal swelling, or much less urine than usual. These signs can indicate ovarian complications or another urgent pelvic problem.
