When ovulation feels like a UTI

An ovary can cause one-sided pelvic aching or pressure around the middle of a cycle. Nearby bladder or bowel sensations may make this feel like urinary discomfort. A UTI more often causes burning when passing urine, frequent small trips, urgency, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, or lower abdominal discomfort, although symptoms vary. Vaginal discharge, pain during sex or fever may suggest a pelvic infection instead. Recurrent cycle-linked pain may also be associated with Endometriosis or Ovarian Cysts. Symptoms alone cannot reliably tell these causes apart.

Note the cycle day, pain location, urinary changes, temperature, discharge and any blood in the urine. Drink normally and avoid using leftover antibiotics, as the correct treatment depends on the cause. A clinician can test a urine sample and decide whether pregnancy testing, a pelvic examination or imaging is needed. Arrange review if symptoms last beyond a brief episode, return repeatedly, or interfere with sleep, work or usual activity.

Seek urgent help for fever with flank or back pain, vomiting, confusion, fainting, severe one-sided pain, visible blood in urine, or symptoms during a possible pregnancy. Prompt care is also needed for worsening pelvic pain or unusual discharge. A mid-cycle pattern does not rule out infection or another condition.
