What should you know about overbite snoring?

Short answer
An overbite may narrow or alter the upper airway during sleep, but snoring can have several causes and needs assessment when breathing pauses or daytime symptoms occur.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible contributors
- Jaw position, nasal blockage, sleep position, alcohol and body weight
- Warning pattern
- Snoring with pauses, gasping or daytime sleepiness
How jaw position can matter
An overbite changes the relationship between the upper and lower teeth and may be associated with a smaller space behind the tongue. When throat muscles relax during sleep, vibration of narrowed soft tissues can produce snoring. The dental appearance alone cannot show whether airflow is restricted.
Blocked nasal breathing from Allergic Rhinitis or Chronic Sinusitis, alcohol near bedtime, smoking, sleeping on your back and Obesity may also add to the noise. Loud snoring with witnessed pauses, gasping or morning headaches raises concern for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.
What to do next
Ask a dentist or doctor to assess your bite, nose, throat, sleep pattern and medicines rather than assuming the overbite is the only cause. A partner’s recording of pauses or gasps can be useful. Side sleeping, treating nasal congestion and keeping a regular sleep schedule may reduce symptoms.
Avoid alcohol close to bedtime and do not use sedatives for snoring unless prescribed. If weight is contributing, discuss a suitable Weight Management Programme; gradual, supported changes can improve several airway factors.
When to seek care
Arrange medical review for repeated breathing pauses, choking or gasping in sleep, severe morning headaches, unrefreshing sleep, or daytime sleepiness that affects work or driving. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty while awake or chest pain.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether you need a sleep assessment, whether nasal disease or jaw position is contributing, and which dental or airway options fit your examination. Ask how to stay safe while driving if you are sleepy during the day.

Questions people ask
Does an overbite always cause snoring?
No. An overbite may contribute, but nasal blockage, throat anatomy and sleep-related breathing disorders can also be involved.
Can braces cure snoring?
Braces change tooth alignment, but they are not a general treatment for snoring or sleep apnoea. Assessment should guide the choice of treatment.
