Ovarian cyst after your period: what to know

The ovaries change during the menstrual cycle, and a fluid-filled sac can remain visible after bleeding ends. Many cysts cause no symptoms and are found during an examination or scan. Timing alone cannot identify the cyst type. Pain low in the abdomen or pelvis, pressure, bloating or changes in bleeding can occur, while some people feel nothing. A clinician may use a transvaginal ultrasound to assess the cyst's size, shape and contents, then recommend observation or further care.

Record when your period started and ended, the side and pattern of any pain, and whether bleeding or bowel and bladder symptoms changed. Arrange a medical review if the cyst was found incidentally or symptoms continue. Follow the scan plan you are given; a repeat scan may show whether the cyst has changed. Hormonal contraception may be discussed for cycle control in some situations, but it does not suit everyone. Seek urgent medical help for sudden severe pelvic pain, pain with vomiting, faintness, marked weakness, a swollen or rigid abdomen, or heavy vaginal bleeding. These symptoms can occur with complications such as twisting of an ovary or a cyst that has ruptured and needs prompt assessment.
