Ovarian Cancer Radiation Therapy

Radiotherapy directs high-energy beams at a defined area to damage cancer cells. The team plans the field carefully to limit exposure to nearby organs. For ovarian cancer, it may be discussed when disease is confined to a particular area, has returned locally, or is causing a troublesome symptom. It is not suitable for every person or every pattern of spread.

Before treatment, imaging and planning marks help the team position you consistently. Sessions are usually arranged across a planned course, and the treatment itself is typically brief. The radiation team will explain whether the aim is to control disease, reduce symptoms, or support another treatment.

Tell the team about previous radiotherapy, operations, bowel or bladder problems, medicines, and pregnancy possibility. Ask how the treatment area may affect skin, energy, bowel habits, bladder comfort, or sexual health. Keep the skin in the treatment area clean and use only products recommended by the radiation team.

Fatigue can build during a course, so plan rest while keeping gentle movement if tolerated. Eat and drink in the way your team advises, and report symptoms early rather than waiting for the next appointment. Your clinicians may coordinate radiation with surgery, medicines, or specialist symptom support.

Contact the treatment team for worsening diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, painful urination, new bleeding, skin breakdown, fever, or difficulty keeping fluids down. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion, heavy bleeding, or sudden severe abdominal pain.
