Can ear plugs help with otitis externa?

Otitis externa affects the skin lining the ear canal. Moisture trapped behind a plug can encourage irritation, while a tight, rough, or unclean plug can scratch the canal. Pain, itch, discharge, tenderness, or muffled hearing are reasons to stop using a plug and arrange an assessment.

After the inflammation has settled, a well-fitting swimming plug may be useful for someone whose symptoms are triggered by water. It should not be shared, forced into the canal, or used to push wax deeper.

Ask a clinician whether ear plugs are suitable and what style fits your ear. Keep reusable plugs clean and completely dry between uses; replace them if they become cracked or contaminated. Follow any advice about drying the outer ear after bathing, but do not insert cotton buds or other objects.

Avoid swimming while active pain or discharge is present unless your clinician gives different advice. If a plug causes pressure, itching, or pain, remove it and seek guidance rather than changing to a tighter plug.

Arrange a GP consultation for persistent earache, discharge, worsening tenderness, or hearing change. Seek urgent help for severe pain with swelling around the ear, facial weakness, severe dizziness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Early assessment is especially important with diabetes or reduced immunity.
