What should you know about OT splinting?

Short answer

OT splinting uses a fitted support to protect tissue, control movement, reduce strain, or help a joint work during daily activities.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a splint does

An occupational therapist selects the shape, material, and wearing schedule according to your symptoms, examination, work, and hand function. A splint may rest an irritated area, limit a painful direction, support a weak joint, or hold tissues in a useful position while they heal. It may be custom-made from thermoplastic splint material or supplied as a removable support. Splinting can be used for carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, De Quervain's tenosynovitis, or trigger finger, but the design differs for each problem.

A splint is not the same as a cast. It may be removable for hygiene or exercises, while fracture casting is generally intended to provide more continuous protection when a fracture needs it.

Using it safely

Follow the exact wearing instructions, including when to remove the splint for washing, skin checks, or prescribed exercises. Keep the skin clean and dry, and inspect for rubbing, blisters, colour change, swelling, or numbness. Do not tighten straps to the point that fingers or toes become cold or discoloured. Keep the support away from heat unless the therapist gives specific care instructions. Bring it to follow-up visits so the fit can be adjusted as swelling and movement change.

When to get help

Remove the splint and seek advice promptly if you develop increasing numbness, tingling, weakness, severe pain, blue or pale digits, unusual coldness, or skin damage. Urgent assessment is needed after a new injury with deformity, uncontrolled bleeding, or loss of circulation. Do not reshape a custom splint yourself; an ill-fitting support can press on nerves or skin.

Questions to ask

What movement should this splint limit? How many hours should I wear it? Which exercises are safe without it? What signs mean the fit needs changing? When will you reassess my skin, sensation, and function?
