What should you know about osteoporosis radiopaedia?

Plain X-rays can show a fracture or suggest reduced bone density, but they do not by themselves provide the full picture of fracture risk. A bone density scan measures mineral density at selected bones and is interpreted alongside age, medical history, previous fractures and medicines. Osteoporosis can affect the spine, hip, wrist and other bones. A vertebral compression fracture may follow a small movement and may present as new back pain rather than a visible injury.

Tell the clinician about falls, previous fractures, family history, smoking, alcohol, nutrition and long-term medicines. They may check movement, balance, height and causes such as vitamin D deficiency. Depending on the findings, care may include fall-proofing at home, resistance and balance training, calcium supplementation or vitamin D supplementation when indicated. Prescription treatment, including bisphosphonate therapy, may be considered when fracture risk warrants it.

Get urgent care for severe pain after a fall, inability to stand or walk, a shortened or twisted limb, or new weakness or numbness. Prompt medical review is also sensible for sudden persistent back pain, particularly after bending, coughing or lifting. These patterns can signal a hip fracture, stress fracture or vertebral compression fracture and need examination rather than self-treatment.
