What should you know about oseltamivir influenza?

Oseltamivir works against influenza viruses; it does not treat every cause of a fever or cough. A clinician may consider it when flu is suspected, especially if illness is severe or the person has a higher risk of complications. It is not a substitute for assessment when breathing becomes difficult.

Common influenza features include fever, chills, cough, headache, fatigue, and feeling generally unwell. Nausea or vomiting can occur with the medicine. Taking it with food may make stomach upset easier to manage. Follow the prescribed schedule and complete the course unless the prescriber changes the plan.

Take each dose exactly as directed and tell the prescriber about kidney problems, pregnancy, allergies, or medicines you already use. Rest, drink fluids if you can, and avoid close contact while fever and strong symptoms continue. Do not share capsules or use someone else’s prescription.

If a dose is missed, follow the medicine instructions or ask a pharmacist rather than doubling the next dose. Keep track of worsening cough, returning fever, unusual drowsiness, or reduced drinking. These changes can signal a complication such as pneumonia and deserve medical advice.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion, collapse, or inability to keep fluids down. Contact a clinician promptly if fever or cough worsens after initial improvement, or if a child, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with a long-term illness becomes significantly more unwell.
