What should you know about onset pneumonia?

Early symptoms may include cough, fever, chills, tiredness, chest discomfort, or shortness of breath. Some people cough up phlegm. Symptoms can follow a cold, influenza, or COVID-19, but pneumonia can also develop without a clear preceding illness. A clinician considers your symptoms, breathing rate, oxygen level, chest examination, and sometimes imaging or other tests.

Arrange a clinical assessment if a cough is worsening, fever persists, breathing feels harder, or you feel unusually weak. Rest, drink fluids if you can, avoid smoking, and follow prescribed treatment exactly. Do not start leftover antibiotics; the cause may be bacterial, viral, or another problem, and treatment depends on the assessment.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, severe chest pain, or inability to keep fluids down. A very unwell person with infection symptoms may need prompt assessment for sepsis. Older adults, babies, pregnant people, and those with heart, lung, or immune conditions should seek advice early.

Ask what may be causing the symptoms, whether you need a chest examination or imaging, which warning signs should prompt escalation, and when you should expect improvement. Mention recent illness, medicines, allergies, smoking, and any long-term health condition.
