Oily Skin Care Routine for Men

Short answer
A useful routine for men with oily skin combines gentle cleansing, lightweight hydration, daily sunscreen and targeted acne care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Morning
- Cleanse, moisturise and use sunscreen.
- Evening
- Cleanse and use only one new active at a time.
- Avoid
- Scrubs, picking and heavy facial oils.
Why skin becomes oily
Sebaceous glands make sebum, an oil that supports the skin barrier. Excess sebum can leave the face shiny and may mix with dead skin cells inside pores. Shaving, heavy hair products, humid weather and harsh scrubbing can make irritation or blocked pores more noticeable. Oily skin can occur without acne, while acne is a condition that may develop when follicles become blocked and inflamed.
Build the routine
Wash with a mild, non-abrasive cleanser in the morning and after sweating; lukewarm water is kinder than hot water. Apply an oil-free or non-comedogenic moisturiser, then broad-spectrum sunscreen. At night, cleanse again and introduce one acne-focused product gradually if clogged pores or spots are present. Shave with a clean razor, avoid picking, and choose hair and beard products that do not leave an oily film on facial skin. A dermatologist can discuss options such as topical treatment or Isotretinoin Treatment when acne remains difficult to control.
When to arrange a review
Arrange dermatology care for painful deep spots, scarring, sudden severe oiliness, or persistent redness and scale around the nose, eyebrows or scalp. These patterns may fit Acne, Hormonal Acne or Seborrheic Dermatitis and need different treatment. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading swelling, marked pain, pus with fever, or eye involvement.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your cleanser and shaving products suit acne-prone skin, which active ingredient fits your spots, and how to protect irritated skin while treating oiliness.

Questions people ask
Should men with oily skin skip moisturiser?
No. A light, non-comedogenic moisturiser can support the barrier and reduce irritation from cleansing or shaving.
Does oily skin always cause acne?
No. Oily skin may be present without acne, although excess sebum can contribute to blocked follicles.
