Short answer

Applying oil to oily skin may increase greasiness or clog-prone texture, although a carefully chosen lightweight product can support dryness caused by harsh cleansing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why oily skin needs balance

Oily skin reflects increased sebum on the surface. Adding an oil does not switch off sebum production, and a heavy or fragranced formula may feel occlusive or worsen blemishes in some people. On the other hand, stripping the skin with repeated washing or strong alcohol-based products can cause tightness and irritation, making the routine harder to tolerate.

Oily skin can occur alongside acne, hormonal acne, or seborrheic dermatitis. Grease alone does not identify one of these conditions, so the pattern of spots, scale, redness, itch, and affected areas matters.

Build a simple routine

Cleanse gently, use a non-comedogenic moisturiser when needed, and choose products labelled for oily or acne-prone skin. If you test an oil, introduce a small amount on one area and stop if new spots, stinging, or itch develops. Avoid layering several occlusive products or scrubbing to remove shine.

Persistent inflammatory acne or severe oiliness may need prescription care. Isotretinoin treatment can reduce sebum production but requires a clinician’s assessment, monitoring, and careful discussion of safety, pregnancy considerations, and side effects.

When to arrange a review

Seek dermatology advice for painful deep spots, scarring, widespread redness, persistent itching or scale, or oiliness that is affecting daily life despite a gentle routine. Prompt review is appropriate if a product causes swelling, blistering, or a rapidly spreading rash.

Questions for your doctor

Is my oiliness part of acne, hormonal acne, seborrheic dermatitis, or a normal skin pattern? Which moisturiser and cleanser should I use? If medication is appropriate, what monitoring and precautions would it involve?

Often yes. A light, non-comedogenic moisturiser can reduce dryness and irritation without adding a heavy greasy layer.

Can face oil cause acne?

Some oils and formulas can worsen clogged pores or irritation, while others may be tolerated; introduce products cautiously and stop if blemishes increase.
