What should you know about normal DEXA scan results?

Your report may list scores for the hip and spine and identify the comparison used. A result in the expected range is reassuring for those measured locations. It does not show how every bone in the body would measure, and it cannot predict whether a particular fall will cause injury.

Clinicians consider age, previous fractures, family history, medicines, mobility, smoking, alcohol and conditions affecting hormones or nutrition. The written result is one part of that assessment, not a diagnosis based on a number alone.

Keep a copy of the results and ask the ordering clinician to explain the scores in plain language. Follow advice on resistance exercise, balance, safe sunlight or vitamin D, calcium intake and reducing fall hazards. Tell the clinician if you have had a fracture from a minor injury or have [Premature Ovarian Insufficiency](/conditions/premature-ovarian-insufficiency/). Follow-up timing should match your health history and the reason for testing.

Seek prompt care after a fall causing persistent hip, back or wrist pain, difficulty standing, or a visible change in shape. Emergency help is needed for severe back pain with new leg weakness, numbness in the saddle area, or bladder or bowel changes. A normal result from the past cannot assess a new injury.

Ask which score and comparison group were used, whether your fracture history changes the plan, and whether medication or hormonal factors matter.
