Can normal delivery be painless?

People may use painless delivery to describe labour with little discomfort, effective analgesia or a strong sense of control. Contractions still cause the uterus to tighten and the cervix to open, while pressure may be felt as the baby descends. An epidural can numb much of the pain, but it may not remove every sensation and requires particular monitoring. Other choices can include breathing support, movement, massage, warm water, gas and air or an injection, depending on the maternity setting and your clinical needs.

Tell your clinician what worries you about pain and ask which methods are available where you will give birth. Discuss when to request an epidural, how mobility may be affected and what monitoring is needed. Practise breathing and relaxation, choose a supportive companion and learn positions that keep you comfortable. Write down preferred options, while accepting that timing, staffing and your health may alter the plan. Oxytocin or induction may be offered for a medical reason and can affect contraction patterns.

Call maternity care urgently for heavy bleeding, severe constant pain, faintness, breathing difficulty, fever, reduced fetal movement or a severe headache with visual symptoms. Seek advice if pain suddenly changes, does not ease between contractions or begins with fluid loss that concerns you. Use your unit's instructions for when regular contractions require assessment.

Ask what pain relief is available, whether an epidural is offered, how it affects movement and monitoring, and what you can try while waiting for medical analgesia.
