What should you know about non-tubal ectopic pregnancy?

Ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilised egg implants outside the main cavity of the uterus. Most ectopic pregnancies are tubal, but implantation can occur in the cervix, ovary, abdomen, or the part of the tube passing through the uterine wall. The location affects symptoms, imaging, and treatment choices. Early symptoms can include one-sided pelvic pain or vaginal bleeding, although symptoms vary and may be absent at first.

A transvaginal ultrasound helps locate the pregnancy and check the uterus, pelvis, and surrounding structures. Blood tests may be repeated to follow pregnancy hormone changes. Pelvic inflammatory disease can affect the fallopian tubes and is one possible background factor, but a non-tubal location can occur without a clear cause.

Contact an early-pregnancy or gynaecology service promptly if a pregnancy test is positive and you have pain or bleeding. Bring the date of your last menstrual period, any test results, and a list of medicines. Treatment may involve careful monitoring, medicine, or surgery, depending on the implantation site, pregnancy hormone pattern, symptoms, and examination findings. A salpingectomy removes a fallopian tube and is relevant to some tubal cases, but it is not automatically the treatment for a non-tubal pregnancy.

Go to an emergency department for severe or worsening pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked weakness, heavy vaginal bleeding, or trouble breathing. These symptoms can signal internal bleeding or another urgent complication. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint. Even mild symptoms deserve prompt assessment because an ectopic pregnancy can change quickly.

Ask where the pregnancy appears to be located, whether the scan needs repeating, how blood tests will be followed, which treatment options fit that location, and which symptoms should take you straight to emergency care.
