What should you know about night sweating?

Short answer
Night sweating means sweating enough during sleep to dampen clothing or bedding; it may be caused by room temperature, hormonal changes, medicines, infection or another health condition.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
An occasional sweaty night is often linked to bedding, weather, alcohol, stress or a fever. Repeated episodes that wake you, soak the bed or occur in a cool room deserve a closer look, especially if other symptoms are present.
What night sweating can mean
Start with the setting: check the bedroom temperature, bedding, sleepwear and recent changes in alcohol or medicines. Fever, anxiety, low blood sugar and hormonal shifts can also trigger sweating. Menopause is one possible cause when night sweating occurs with hot flushes or changes in periods.
Night sweating can also present with infections such as glandular fever, brucellosis or HIV infection, and with conditions including hyperthyroidism, lymphoma or chronic myeloid leukaemia. A night sweat does not identify its cause by itself; the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter.
What you can do now
Keep the room comfortably cool, choose breathable sleepwear and use lighter bedding if needed. Drink fluids after a heavy sweating episode. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice, but make a note of any medicine or supplement started before the symptom began.
Record when episodes happen, whether your clothes or bedding become wet, your temperature if you feel feverish, and symptoms such as cough, diarrhoea, palpitations, weight change, swollen glands or unusual tiredness. This information helps a clinician decide whether examination or tests are appropriate.
When to seek medical care
Arrange a medical appointment if night sweating keeps recurring, is unexplained, or comes with fever, persistent cough, unexplained weight loss, swollen glands, marked fatigue, diarrhoea or a new change in your general health. Mention recent travel, animal exposure, sexual health concerns and any new medicines when relevant.
Seek urgent help for sweating with chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, confusion, or signs of a severe allergic reaction. These symptoms need prompt assessment regardless of whether the sweating occurs during the day or night.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what causes are most relevant to your pattern, whether a medicine could be contributing, and which examination or tests might clarify the cause. You can also ask what changes should prompt earlier review and how to manage sleep disruption while the cause is being assessed.

Questions people ask
When are night sweats more concerning?
Recurring or unexplained soaking sweats are more concerning when they occur with fever, persistent cough, weight loss, swollen glands or significant fatigue. Chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting or confusion require urgent help.
Can a warm bedroom cause night sweating?
Yes. A warm room, heavy bedding or non-breathable sleepwear can cause sweating during sleep. Cooling the room and changing bedding can help show whether the environment is contributing.
Should I stop a medicine that might be causing night sweating?
No. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice. Note when it was started and discuss the possible connection with a clinician.
