What should you know about Nexplanon use?

Short answer

Nexplanon is a small etonogestrel implant placed under the skin of the upper arm to prevent pregnancy and may change bleeding patterns.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

None; condoms are needed for STI protection

How Nexplanon works

The flexible rod releases etonogestrel, a progestogen. It mainly prevents the release of an egg and also makes cervical mucus thicker, which makes sperm movement more difficult. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Bleeding may become lighter, less predictable, more frequent, or absent. Headache, breast tenderness, acne, mood changes, or soreness near the insertion site can occur. A change in bleeding does not by itself show whether the implant is working.

Using the implant safely

Have a trained clinician insert and remove the rod, and keep the insertion and replacement date in your records. Check occasionally that you can feel it in the expected area, without repeatedly pressing the skin. Tell a clinician about medicines, supplements, or herbal products you use, because some can reduce hormonal contraceptive protection.

If you cannot feel the rod, use a backup contraceptive method and arrange an examination. Discuss troublesome bleeding rather than removing the implant without advice; treatment options depend on your history and other medicines.

When to seek medical help

Seek prompt care for severe or worsening arm pain, spreading redness, pus, marked swelling, numbness, or a rod that appears to have moved. Get urgent help for chest pain, trouble breathing, sudden weakness, or severe abdominal pain.

Contact a clinician if you have a positive pregnancy test, persistent heavy bleeding, or a new concern after insertion. A pregnancy with an implant needs medical assessment, particularly when abdominal pain or dizziness is present.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how the insertion date affects your protection, which medicines could interact with etonogestrel, what bleeding pattern to expect, and how removal or replacement will be arranged.
