What should you know about Nexplanon location?

The rod is not placed in the breast, chest, or forearm. A trained clinician selects the arm and position, numbs the skin, and places the rod in the tissue beneath the skin. You may be able to feel it as a narrow, firm rod. It can be harder to feel when there is swelling soon after insertion, so the clinic may explain when and how to check it safely.

Once the insertion area is comfortable, gently feel along the arm for the rod as instructed. Do not massage it, push it deeper, or try to reposition it. Keep your implant record and tell healthcare professionals that you have an implant before procedures involving the arm. If you are considering removal, use a trained provider who can locate and remove it safely.

Arrange a prompt assessment if the rod cannot be felt, the skin over it changes, or you think it has shifted. Increasing pain, redness, warmth, discharge, or swelling also needs medical advice. Seek urgent care for new arm weakness, numbness, severe swelling, or breathing symptoms. Until the location is confirmed, ask the clinic whether backup contraception is needed.
