The implant releases etonogestrel gradually, but it is not intended to remain in place indefinitely. The date for review, replacement, or removal depends on the product information used locally, your health history, medicines, and whether you want to continue contraception. Keep the insertion date and planned review date in your personal records. Bleeding changes do not tell you how much contraceptive protection remains. If the date has passed or you cannot confirm it, use backup contraception and arrange a review.

Contact the inserting clinic before the planned end date so there is time to discuss removal, replacement, or another method. Do not remove the rod yourself. Tell the clinician about new medicines, pregnancy plans, changes in your health, or problems feeling the implant.
