Short answer

Nexplanon is a small contraceptive device placed under the skin of the upper arm that releases etonogestrel over time.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Location
Under the skin of the upper arm.
Protection
Does not prevent sexually transmitted infections.

How the device works

The flexible rod releases a progestogen hormone. This mainly prevents ovulation and also changes cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to pass through the cervix. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. You should be able to feel the rod under the skin after insertion, although its exact position can change and it may be harder to feel in some arms. Changes in bleeding, including irregular spotting or no bleeding, can happen with a contraceptive implant.

Using and checking it

Keep the insertion area clean while it heals and follow the aftercare instructions given by the inserting clinician. Avoid pressing on the rod repeatedly. If you cannot feel it, notice a new shape or position, or develop persistent discomfort, arrange a review rather than trying to locate or move it yourself. Tell a clinician about medicines, supplements, or health conditions before insertion or replacement because they may affect contraceptive choices. The rod material is described in Etonogestrel Implant Rod.

When to seek care

Contact a clinician for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, discharge, fever, severe pain, numbness, or a wound that opens. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, or marked arm swelling. Arrange prompt assessment if the device appears to be coming through the skin or cannot be felt, especially if you have had unprotected sex and are unsure whether contraceptive protection is in place.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how the rod was positioned, how to check it safely, which bleeding changes are expected, when it needs review or replacement, and what method to use if it cannot be felt or its position changes.
