What should you know about a new ECG machine?

An ECG, also called an electrocardiogram, turns the heart’s electrical signals into a tracing that a trained clinician reviews. The machine may display the tracing on a screen, store it for review, or print it for the medical record. Newer equipment can be compact and may transfer a recording to a clinical system, but it does not replace the clinician’s interpretation.

During a standard resting ECG, adhesive sensors are placed on the chest and sometimes the arms and legs. You lie still and breathe normally while the recording is made. The sensor placement should not hurt, although removing adhesive can briefly irritate sensitive skin. The machine records activity; it does not treat an abnormal rhythm.

Wear clothing that allows access to the chest, wrists, and ankles, and tell the clinician about any skin sensitivity or difficulty removing clothing. Avoid applying body lotion or oily products where sensors will be placed, because they can affect adhesion. Follow the appointment instructions about medicines; do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Before the recording, mention symptoms such as palpitations, chest discomfort, breathlessness, dizziness, or fainting and say when they occurred. Keep your body relaxed and avoid talking or moving during the tracing. A resting ECG is brief, but the full visit can take longer if the clinician needs to explain the result or arrange another assessment.

Do not wait for an ECG appointment if you have chest pressure or pain that is severe, persistent, or spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw; severe breathlessness; fainting; sudden weakness; or a new, rapidly worsening heartbeat with feeling unwell. Seek emergency help through local services. An ECG machine cannot by itself rule out every urgent cause of these symptoms.

If symptoms are mild but recurring, arrange a clinical assessment and record what you felt, how long it lasted, and what you were doing at the time. A single resting recording may not capture an intermittent rhythm, so a clinician may consider monitoring over a longer period or other tests.

Ask what type of ECG is planned, what the tracing shows, whether your symptoms were captured, and whether you need follow-up testing or monitoring. If adhesive caused a rash before, ask how the team can protect your skin.
