What should you know about new asthma inhalers?

A preventer reduces airway inflammation when used regularly. A reliever is used for sudden symptoms, while some combination inhalers provide both maintenance and rapid relief under a specific plan. The colours and names vary, so identify the medicine and instructions rather than relying on appearance.

Do not share inhalers or change frequency without advice. If symptoms continue, your clinician may review technique, triggers, adherence and whether spirometry is needed. Keep a written action plan that says what to do when symptoms start or worsen.

Seek emergency help if you are struggling to breathe, cannot speak in full sentences, become drowsy or confused, or develop blue or grey lips. Follow your action plan while waiting.

Arrange prompt review when cough, wheezing or chest tightness repeatedly returns, wakes you, limits activity or needs more reliever medicine than expected. Do not assume a new device is working if symptoms are worsening.
