A saline rinse can loosen thick mucus and wash allergens or irritants from the nasal passages. This may make breathing easier and reduce pressure, but it does not establish whether symptoms are caused by sinusitis, a common cold, or allergic rhinitis. Facial pain and pressure, a blocked nose, cough, earache, and fever can occur with several conditions.

Nasal rinsing is supportive care. It cannot replace assessment when symptoms are severe, persist, or keep returning, and it is not a substitute for treatment prescribed for a bacterial or other complication.

Use a commercially prepared saline sachet or the correct salt mixture, and use distilled, sterile, or previously boiled and cooled water. Wash your hands, follow the device instructions, and clean and air-dry the pot after each use. Lean over a sink, breathe through your mouth, and stop if you develop significant pain, bleeding, or worsening ear pressure.

Do not share the device. Avoid forcing fluid when the nose is completely blocked. Ask a pharmacist or clinician for advice if you have had nasal surgery, frequent nosebleeds, or a condition affecting your immune system.

Seek prompt medical advice for severe facial swelling or pain, a high or persistent fever, vision changes, marked drowsiness, a stiff neck, or symptoms that worsen after initial improvement. Get urgent care for trouble breathing, confusion, or swelling around the eye.
