What should you know about point-of-care ultrasound?

Short answer

Point-of-care ultrasound is a bedside scan that uses sound waves to produce immediate images of muscles, tendons, joints, fluid, and nearby soft tissues.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Method
Live images made with sound waves
Useful for
Many superficial muscles, tendons, joints, and fluid collections
Limit
Some deep or bone-hidden problems need other imaging

What the scan can show

A clinician moves a small probe over gelled skin while watching live images. Changing the probe angle or moving the joint can show how a tendon or muscle behaves. In orthopaedics, the scan may help assess swelling, fluid around a joint, tendon irritation, muscle injury, or a superficial mass. It can also guide a needle toward a selected area when an injection or fluid procedure is appropriate.

Ultrasound does not show every structure equally well. Bone blocks views beyond its surface, and deep or complex injuries may need X-ray, MRI, or another examination. The result is interpreted alongside your history and physical examination, rather than as a stand-alone diagnosis.

Preparing for the appointment

Usually, you can eat, drink, and take regular medicines unless the clinic gives different instructions. Wear clothing that allows access to the painful area. Tell the clinician about wounds, rashes, recent procedures, anticoagulants, and whether touching the area causes severe pain. During the scan, describe discomfort and follow requests to move or relax the joint.

If ultrasound is being used to guide an injection, ask what medicine is planned, why the target was chosen, and what aftercare applies. A scan can improve visual guidance, but it does not make every procedure suitable or remove all risks.

When to seek care

A scan appointment should not delay urgent assessment for a limb that is suddenly cold, pale, numb, severely weak, or visibly deformed. Seek prompt medical care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain after an injury, fever with a hot swollen joint, or loss of function. These symptoms need clinical assessment even if an ultrasound is available.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what the ultrasound is intended to answer, whether another scan is more suitable, and how the findings will change treatment. If a guided procedure is proposed, ask about alternatives, preparation, expected soreness, and warning signs afterward. Confirm when and how you will receive the result.

Questions people ask

Is point-of-care ultrasound painful?

The scan itself is usually well tolerated, although pressure or joint movement may be uncomfortable over an injured area.

Can it replace an MRI?

Not always. Ultrasound and MRI answer different questions, and the clinician chooses imaging according to the suspected problem.
