Neck Pain, Stiffness and Headache: What to Know

Tight neck and scalp muscles can refer discomfort toward the back of the head or temples. Long periods at a screen, stress, an awkward pillow, or limited neck movement may contribute. Cervical spondylosis, muscle strain, and myofascial pain syndrome are possible musculoskeletal explanations. Headache with pain into an arm, tingling or weakness may accompany cervical radiculopathy or a herniated disc. A recent collision raises concern for whiplash. These patterns cannot confirm a cause by themselves, and a new or unusual headache should be judged on its own features.

Rest from the aggravating activity without staying in bed all day. Try slow neck turns, chin tucks and shoulder blade movements only within a comfortable range. Apply warmth to tight muscles, drink fluids, and take screen breaks with the head supported over the shoulders. A quiet, dim environment may help if light or noise worsens the headache. Use medicines only as directed and check with a pharmacist if you have other conditions or take regular treatment. A clinician can assess the neck and headache pattern together.

Get urgent help for a sudden severe headache, headache after a head or neck injury, fever with marked neck stiffness, confusion, fainting, seizure, new vision or speech difficulty, or weakness or numbness on one side. Seek prompt assessment if headaches are becoming more frequent, waking you, or accompanied by repeated vomiting. Emergency symptoms should not be explained away as posture or muscle tension.
