What should you know about neck pain lump on back of neck?

A tender lump can occur with a strained or tight muscle, an inflamed skin structure, or a nearby lymph node responding to infection. A firm, fixed, enlarging, or persistent lump needs a clinician's examination rather than repeated pressing or massage.

Neck pain can also arise from cervical spondylosis, myofascial pain syndrome, text neck, whiplash, cervical radiculopathy, or a herniated disc. These conditions generally cause pain or altered sensation rather than a visible lump, so the lump and the neck symptoms should be considered separately.

Note when you first noticed it, whether it changes size, whether it moves under the skin, and whether the skin is red or warm. Avoid squeezing it or applying forceful pressure. Gentle neck movement and a warm pack may ease muscular discomfort, but do not use them to delay an examination.

Book a medical review if the lump remains, grows, returns, or is joined by unexplained tiredness, night sweating, weight change, or persistent fever. A clinician may inspect the skin, feel the area, and decide whether further tests are useful.

Seek urgent care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe redness, high fever, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or a lump after significant trauma. Emergency help is also needed for new arm or leg weakness, severe balance trouble, or sudden neurological changes.

Ask what the lump feels like on examination, whether it is separate from the spine or muscle, what changes should be monitored, and whether your neck pain suggests a nerve or joint problem.
