Nebulizer treatment for asthma: what to know

A compressor pushes air through a medication chamber, creating a mist you inhale through a mouthpiece or mask. Treatment may take longer than using an inhaler because you breathe the mist steadily while the chamber empties. The medicine may relax airway muscles or address inflammation, depending on what was prescribed.

Wheezing, cough and chest tightness are common asthma presentations, but their presence does not establish the cause by itself. Allergic Rhinitis, House Dust Mite Allergy and Chronic Cough may need separate attention.

Wash your hands, check the medicine, sit upright and make a good seal around the mouthpiece or mask. Breathe calmly and follow the device instructions. When finished, switch off the compressor, dispose of single-use items as directed, and clean the reusable parts so they can dry fully.

Notice whether breathing, wheezing or chest tightness improves and report troublesome effects such as tremor, a pounding heartbeat or throat discomfort. Keep using your longer-term asthma medicines unless your clinician changes the plan.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, inability to speak normally, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, exhaustion, or symptoms that continue to worsen despite your prescribed plan. A nebulizer session should not delay calling for help or going to an emergency department.
