A DEXA scan, also called a bone density scan, uses low-dose X-rays to estimate bone mineral density, commonly at the hip and spine. The result helps a clinician consider bone strength and fracture risk alongside your age, medical history, medicines, and previous fractures. It is a measurement, not a complete picture of bone health, and it does not explain every type of bone pain.

Testing may be considered when there are risk factors for reduced bone density, including some hormonal conditions such as premature ovarian insufficiency. Your clinician can explain the reason for referral and whether another test is more suitable.

Search for a hospital or imaging centre that offers bone density scanning, then confirm the location, appointment time, referral requirements, accessibility, and expected report pathway. Tell the service if you may be pregnant, have recently had another scan using contrast material, or cannot lie in the required position. Wear comfortable clothing and follow the centre's instructions about supplements and medicines. Bring your referral and relevant previous results if requested.

A DEXA scan is usually planned rather than an emergency test. Seek urgent care for a suspected fracture after an injury, severe sudden back or hip pain, inability to bear weight, or new weakness or numbness. Contact the imaging service if you develop a health change before the appointment or are unsure whether the scan should proceed. Do not delay urgent assessment while trying to arrange a routine scan.

Ask why the scan is recommended, which body sites will be measured, how to prepare, when the report will be available, and how the result will affect your care. Ask whether medicines, hormonal history, or previous fractures change how the result is interpreted.
