What should you know about Nd:YAG laser hair removal?

Short answer
Nd:YAG laser hair removal uses controlled heat in the hair follicle to reduce regrowth over a planned course of treatments.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How Nd:YAG targets hair
The laser sends light through the skin toward pigment in the hair follicle. Absorbed energy produces heat that can disrupt the follicle's ability to grow hair. Hair responds best when it is in a suitable growth phase, so appointments are spaced to catch different follicles. Hair colour, thickness, body area, skin tone and hormonal influences all affect the plan.
Nd:YAG is often considered when a longer wavelength is useful for darker skin tones, but the safest choice depends on an examination and careful settings. You may feel warmth, snapping or brief stinging. Temporary redness around follicles is common; burns, blistering and pigment changes are possible if treatment is poorly matched or the skin is tanned.
Getting ready and looking after skin
Tell the provider about tanning, medicines, active skin disease, cold sores, scarring and any tendency to develop ingrown hairs. Avoid waxing, threading or plucking before a session because the follicle needs to remain present; shaving is commonly preferred when the clinic advises it. Avoid tanning and follow instructions about deodorant, creams and sun protection.
After treatment, keep the area cool and clean, avoid picking follicle bumps, and pause irritating products until sensitivity settles. Protect treated skin from sunlight. If you are treating hair linked with hirsutism or recurrent ingrown hairs, discuss the underlying pattern as well as the laser plan.
Signs that need medical advice
Contact the clinic if redness spreads, pain intensifies, blisters appear, skin becomes very swollen, pus develops or fever occurs. Seek prompt review for persistent light or dark patches, scarring or a change that does not improve between appointments. Emergency care is appropriate for breathing difficulty or facial swelling with hives.
Questions worth asking
Why is Nd:YAG suitable for my skin tone and hair type? How should I prepare each body area, and what cooling or eye protection will be used? Ask how you will manage a test spot, what improvement can reasonably be assessed, and whether a medical condition is contributing to unwanted hair or bumps.
