NDPH headache symptoms: what to know

Short answer
NDPH headache symptoms typically involve a new headache that becomes continuous or daily from its onset and may vary in intensity.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Key clue
- A recognisable onset followed by daily or continuous pain
- Possible companions
- Nausea, light or sound sensitivity, dizziness, or neck discomfort
- Helpful record
- Onset date, pattern, triggers, associated symptoms, and medicines
Recognising the pattern
The defining clue is the history: a person can often identify when the headache began, after which it is present every day or nearly every day. The pain may feel pressing, tight, throbbing, or mixed, and it may affect one or both sides of the head. Light or sound sensitivity, nausea, scalp tenderness, dizziness, or neck discomfort can accompany it, although not everyone has these features.
Symptoms can overlap with migraine, tension-type headache, sinus problems, viral illness, or other conditions. A headache symptom does not by itself identify its cause. Tell a clinician whether the pain is new, whether it is continuous, what makes it worse, and whether neurological or visual symptoms occur.
What you can do now
Write down the date and circumstances of onset, daily timing, pain quality, severity, sleep, meals, fluids, screen exposure, and medicines. During an episode, try a calm environment, regular hydration, gentle routine, and a consistent sleep schedule if safe for you. Use medicines only as directed and mention all over-the-counter products at review, particularly if you are taking them often. Arrange an appointment for a new daily headache rather than relying on symptom matching online.
Warning symptoms
Get emergency help for a thunderclap or rapidly maximal headache, weakness, numbness, facial drooping, speech difficulty, confusion, seizure, fainting, new severe vision change, repeated vomiting, fever with neck stiffness, or headache after head trauma. Seek prompt review if the headache is progressively worsening, wakes you repeatedly, or comes with unusual drowsiness. The urgency comes from these warning features, not from the mere presence of a headache.
Useful questions
Ask whether your onset pattern fits NDPH, which accompanying symptoms change the assessment, whether an examination or further testing is needed, and how to monitor the headache. Confirm which treatment options are suitable for you and when to return if the pattern changes.

Is every daily headache NDPH?
No. Daily headache can have several explanations, so the onset pattern and an appropriate clinical assessment matter.
Should I wait if the headache is new but mild?
Arrange routine medical advice for a new daily headache, and seek emergency help if warning symptoms appear or the pain changes rapidly.
