Yellow fever is an infection spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes in certain parts of Africa and South America. The vaccine trains the immune system to recognise the virus before travel. It is a live attenuated vaccine, meaning it uses a weakened form of the virus rather than the illness-causing form.

A vaccination certificate may be requested when entering a country with yellow fever entry rules, especially after travel from an area where transmission occurs. Requirements depend on the itinerary, transit points, destination rules, and the traveller’s age and health. A clinician or authorised vaccination centre can check the current requirement for your route.

Arrange a travel-health appointment well before departure so there is time to review your itinerary and medical history. Bring your passport or travel details, vaccination record, and a list of medicines and allergies. Tell the clinician if you are pregnant, have an immune-system condition, take immune-suppressing treatment, or have had a serious reaction to a vaccine or its ingredients; these details can change whether vaccination is suitable.

After vaccination, mild soreness, tiredness, headache, or a low fever can occur. Mosquito protection remains useful: wear covered clothing, apply an appropriate repellent, and use screened or air-conditioned accommodation where possible. The vaccine does not replace advice about other travel vaccines or food and water precautions.

Seek urgent medical help after vaccination for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, fainting, confusion, or a rapidly worsening illness. Contact a clinician promptly for a persistent high fever, severe headache, unusual weakness, or symptoms that concern you, particularly if you have a condition or treatment that affects immunity.

During or after travel, urgent assessment is needed for fever with chills, severe headache, vomiting, jaundice, unusual bleeding, or confusion. Tell the healthcare professional about recent travel and mosquito exposure, even if you received the vaccine, because fever can have causes other than yellow fever.
