Nd:YAG Laser Hair Removal for Dark Skin: What to Know

Nd:YAG laser hair removal can reduce unwanted hair on dark skin when the settings, cooling, and treatment plan are chosen for your skin tone and hair type. Its longer wavelength is designed to reach pigment in the hair follicle while limiting how much energy is absorbed by melanin near the surface of the skin. That can make it a useful option for deeper skin tones, although every laser treatment still carries a risk of irritation or pigment change.

The laser heats the follicle's pigment and can weaken the hair as it grows. Hair responds best when it contains enough pigment for the laser to detect, so very light, grey, or white hair may respond poorly. Treatment is usually planned as a series because follicles are more vulnerable during particular growth phases; treated hairs may shed gradually rather than disappear immediately.

Dark skin needs careful energy selection because excess heat can cause blistering, a temporary light or dark mark, or longer-lasting scarring.
