Nd:YAG laser hair removal: what to know

The laser is attracted to pigment in the hair shaft and follicle. Its energy becomes heat, which can weaken the follicle while the handpiece or cooling system helps protect the skin surface. Hair does not all grow at the same time, so one visit cannot affect every follicle equally. Coarser, darker hair often responds more visibly than fine or very light hair, and hormonal changes can influence regrowth.

Have a consultation before treating areas with active infection, eczema, recent tanning, tattoos, or unusual moles. Shave if instructed, but avoid waxing, threading, or plucking before a session. Protect the area from sun and tell the clinician about medicines that increase light sensitivity. Afterward, use gentle products, avoid picking at bumps, and follow advice about heat, friction, and sun.

Redness and follicle swelling can be short-lived, but increasing pain, blisters, open sores, pus, spreading redness, or a lasting change in skin colour needs review. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the lips and face. Persistent new hair growth with irregular periods or other hormonal symptoms also deserves medical assessment, because laser does not address every underlying cause.
