Short answer

Nausea, constipation and fatigue can reflect slowed digestion, dehydration, medicine effects or an underlying condition.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What this combination can mean

Constipation may cause bloating, abdominal discomfort and reduced appetite, while nausea can make eating and drinking harder. That reduced intake may worsen tiredness and dehydration. A change in routine, low activity, travel, iron-containing medicines or pain medicines can also slow bowel movements. Persistent constipation with fatigue can occur with hypothyroidism, and recurring abdominal pain with altered bowel habits may fit irritable bowel syndrome. Diverticular disease is another possible bowel condition, but symptoms alone cannot identify a cause.

Practical steps

Sip fluids regularly unless a clinician has advised fluid restriction. Choose small meals, add fibre gradually through foods such as vegetables, fruit and whole grains, and take gentle walks if you feel able. A sudden large increase in fibre can worsen bloating, so increase it slowly. Review new medicines with a pharmacist or doctor rather than stopping prescribed treatment. Keep a brief record of bowel movements, nausea, food and fluid intake, abdominal pain, and any weight change. Nutrition counselling can help if eating has become difficult.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, black or bloody stool, fainting, confusion or signs of significant dehydration. Arrange a medical assessment if constipation is new and persistent, fatigue is limiting daily activities, or symptoms keep returning. A clinician may review medicines, examine your abdomen and consider blood tests for problems such as thyroid disease or anaemia.

Questions to take to an appointment

Could any of my medicines or supplements be slowing my bowel movements? Should I be checked for thyroid problems, anaemia or dehydration? What bowel changes should prompt urgent help? Would a safe laxative or nutrition plan suit me?
