What pink eyes can mean

Pinkness happens when small blood vessels on the eye surface become more visible. Conjunctivitis may be caused by a virus, bacteria or irritation; allergy can bring itching and watering. Discharge, eyelid crusting, light sensitivity and changes in vision help a clinician distinguish causes. A red eye can also follow dryness, contact-lens problems or injury, so colour alone is not a diagnosis.

What you can do

Use a clean cool compress over closed eyelids and wash your hands before and after touching the area. Do not share towels, pillows, eye drops or cosmetics. Pause contact lenses until the eye is comfortable and an eye professional says it is safe to resume them. Avoid putting honey, lemon, herbal liquids or homemade mixtures into the eye. Preservative-free lubricating drops may ease dryness; ask a pharmacist which option suits you.

When to seek care

Get urgent medical help for marked pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, an injury, a chemical splash, a very swollen eyelid or a red eye while wearing contact lenses. Arrange a GP consultation if discharge persists, symptoms worsen or the cause is unclear. Antibiotics help only selected bacterial infections and are not useful for every pink eye.
