Natural pink eyes: what to know

How the structures involved in Conjunctivitis differ from normal

Short answer

Natural remedies may soothe mild pink-eye irritation, but they cannot identify the cause or replace an eye assessment when symptoms are severe.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Homemade liquids in the eye.

Wash hands and do not share towels.

What pink eyes can mean

Pinkness happens when small blood vessels on the eye surface become more visible. Conjunctivitis may be caused by a virus, bacteria or irritation; allergy can bring itching and watering. Discharge, eyelid crusting, light sensitivity and changes in vision help a clinician distinguish causes. A red eye can also follow dryness, contact-lens problems or injury, so colour alone is not a diagnosis.

What you can do

Use a clean cool compress over closed eyelids and wash your hands before and after touching the area. Do not share towels, pillows, eye drops or cosmetics. Pause contact lenses until the eye is comfortable and an eye professional says it is safe to resume them. Avoid putting honey, lemon, herbal liquids or homemade mixtures into the eye. Preservative-free lubricating drops may ease dryness; ask a pharmacist which option suits you.

When to seek care

Get urgent medical help for marked pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, an injury, a chemical splash, a very swollen eyelid or a red eye while wearing contact lenses. Arrange a GP consultation if discharge persists, symptoms worsen or the cause is unclear. Antibiotics help only selected bacterial infections and are not useful for every pink eye.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which cause fits your symptoms, whether you should stay away from work or school, and when contact lenses and eye makeup can be used again.

Questions people ask

Is every pink eye an infection?

No. Allergy, dryness and irritation can also make the eye look pink, and an assessment may be needed to tell them apart.

Should I use antibiotic drops?

Only use them when prescribed or specifically advised, because they do not treat viral or allergic causes.
