Natural birth after 2 cesareans: what to know

A previous caesarean does not by itself settle how your next baby must be born. Your clinician will review the reasons for the earlier operations, the type and location of each uterine incision, other uterine procedures, the current placenta and the baby's position. The maternity unit should be able to monitor labour and respond quickly if a caesarean becomes necessary. A planned vaginal birth and a planned repeat Caesarean Section have different benefits and risks, so the decision is shared rather than based on a single factor.

Arrange an early appointment with an obstetric team and bring the operation notes if you have them. Discuss whether labour can start on its own, how contractions and the baby's wellbeing will be monitored, and what pain relief is available. Contact your maternity unit urgently for vaginal bleeding, severe or persistent abdominal pain, a sudden change in the baby's movements, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions or feeling faint. During labour, continuous assessment may be recommended because scar-related complications can need rapid treatment.
