Nasal congestion and cough

A blocked nose can make mucus drain down the throat, provoking a tickly or clearing cough. A common cold may cause congestion, throat discomfort, and cough, while allergic rhinitis can bring sneezing, itching, and watery discharge. Sinusitis may add facial pressure or thick drainage. Ongoing nighttime blockage with loud snoring or pauses in breathing deserves assessment for obstructive sleep apnoea. A blocked nose does not identify one condition by itself.

Drink fluids, rest, and use saline drops or a rinse if suitable for you. Keep smoke, strong scents, and dusty air away from the nose. Honey may soothe a cough for adults and older children, but never give it to an infant. Allergy medication may help when symptoms follow a repeated exposure pattern; ask a pharmacist or clinician which option fits your health history. Seek prompt medical advice for breathing difficulty, chest pain, blue lips, dehydration, confusion, coughing blood, or a cough that is rapidly worsening. Arrange an appointment when symptoms persist, keep returning, disturb sleep, or come with high fever, severe facial pain, or one-sided foul-smelling discharge. A clinician can distinguish allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, chronic sinusitis, house dust mite allergy, or another cause.

Record when symptoms began, whether the cough is dry or productive, what happens at night, and any exposure to dust, pets, smoke, or illness. Ask whether you need an examination, allergy treatment, or review for sinus disease.
