My urine is a little cloudy

A little cloudy urine can be temporary from concentrated urine, crystals, mucus, or contamination, but infection is also possible. Pain, burning, urgency, fever, a strong smell, blood, or back pain makes medical advice more relevant. A single mild change without other symptoms may settle, but repeated cloudiness should not be ignored.

Dehydration makes urine concentrated and can allow mineral crystals to appear cloudy. A urinary tract infection may cause burning, urgency, frequent small amounts, lower abdominal discomfort, or a strong smell. If infection reaches the kidneys, fever, chills, nausea, and pain in the side or back can occur. Mucus or vaginal discharge can mix with a urine sample, and some medicines or supplements change its appearance. Cloudy urine alone cannot confirm an infection.

Drink your usual fluids if you have no fluid restriction and observe the next samples. Take note of burning, urgency, frequency, smell, pain, fever, discharge, and blood. Do not use someone else’s antibiotics or rely on leftover medicine. If symptoms continue, a clinician may request a clean urine sample so it can be checked rather than treating colour alone.

Seek prompt medical care for cloudy urine with fever, chills, vomiting, side or back pain, pregnancy, or feeling very unwell. Get urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, or inability to pass urine. Arrange an appointment when cloudiness persists, returns, or occurs with burning, blood, new urgency, or lower abdominal pain.

Ask whether a urine test is needed and how to collect a clean sample. Tell the clinician about urinary symptoms, fever, back pain, pregnancy possibility, discharge, kidney history, and recent antibiotics.
