My period is dark brown and not heavy

Blood can look brown when it takes longer to leave the uterus and is exposed to air. Light flow at the beginning or end of a period commonly looks darker than fresh red bleeding. Hormonal contraception, delayed ovulation, perimenopause, and changes in the uterine lining can alter flow. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome, fibroids, polyps, or adenomyosis may affect bleeding patterns, but colour alone cannot identify a condition.

Note when the brown bleeding occurs, how long it lasts, whether it follows a missed period, and whether pain, odour, fever, or pregnancy risk is present. Test for pregnancy when relevant. Arrange a routine review if this is a persistent change, bleeding happens between periods or after sex, or your cycles become irregular. Bring a medication and contraception list.

Seek urgent care for severe pelvic pain, fainting, fever, or bleeding that becomes heavy with dizziness. If pregnancy is possible, pain or bleeding needs prompt assessment because colour cannot distinguish a normal period from a pregnancy-related problem. A strong unpleasant odour with pelvic pain or fever also warrants same-day advice.

Ask whether the timing suggests old menstrual blood, whether a pregnancy test or examination is needed, and how symptoms such as pelvic pressure, painful periods, acne, or hot flushes change the assessment.
