Muscle relaxers for period cramps: what to know

During a period, the uterus contracts to shed its lining. This can cause lower abdominal cramping, backache, nausea, diarrhoea, or pain that travels into the thighs. A muscle relaxer aimed at skeletal muscles may not address the chemical signals driving uterine contractions, and it can cause drowsiness or interact with other medicines.

Painful periods can also be associated with adenomyosis, endometriosis, an ovarian endometrioma, pelvic inflammatory disease, or uterine fibroids. The condition presents with painful periods; the presence of cramps alone does not identify which cause is involved.

Heat, gentle movement, rest, and an anti-inflammatory pain medicine may help some people when used safely and according to label directions. A pharmacist or clinician can check allergies, stomach or kidney problems, pregnancy, and interactions before you take it.

If cramps recur, a clinician can discuss hormonal options such as the combined pill or hormonal coil, depending on your health history and contraceptive needs. Keep a record of pain, bleeding, missed activities, and symptoms between periods so the treatment matches the pattern.

Arrange medical review when pain is new, worsening, not controlled by usual measures, or accompanied by bleeding between periods, pain with sex, abnormal discharge, or trouble conceiving. Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain, fainting, fever, vomiting, or very heavy bleeding.
