What should you know about muscle cramps in shins at night?

Short answer
Night-time muscle cramps in the shins are involuntary spasms that can follow tired muscles, limited movement, dehydration or some medicines.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why they may occur at night
A cramp can suddenly make the lower-leg muscles firm and painful while you are asleep or stretching in bed. Long periods of standing, walking or sitting can leave the muscles fatigued or shortened. Reduced fluid intake, sweating and certain medicines may contribute. Less commonly, recurring cramps occur alongside conditions such as peripheral arterial disease, thyroid problems or kidney disease. Keep a note of timing, activity, footwear and any new medicine.
How to ease a cramp
Straighten the leg gradually and pull the toes toward your face while keeping the knee relaxed. If safe, stand and place weight gently through the foot, or walk a few steps. Light rubbing and warmth may help after the muscle begins to release. Drink fluids regularly during the day, especially after sweating, and use gentle calf and ankle movements before bed. Do not start mineral supplements without advice.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for a swollen, hot or red leg, sudden breathlessness, chest pain, faintness or new weakness. Book an appointment when cramps are frequent, disturb sleep repeatedly, last longer than expected, or occur with numbness, cold feet, skin colour change or walking pain. A clinician can check circulation, nerves, medicines and relevant medical conditions.
Questions for your doctor
Could my medicines or circulation be contributing? Which stretches suit me? Do I need tests because the cramps are recurring at night?
